A wonderfully-large matau or traditional fish-hook pendant carved from a glorious pebble of schistose black jade found in the Hokitika River some years ago, this piece shows off its wonderful structure in a play of wave-like patterns throughout the stone, augmented by the occasional white albiut feldspar inclusion. Curved to flow just as eloquently with the shape of the body as the patterns do within, it's a stunning piece with a very high gloss and loads of visual appeal.
Measuring in at 88mm long and 54mm wide, this is a piece which stands out as a bold and proud ornament that's immaculatley suited to the larger frame. Its mild translucency in critical areas showcases the underlying dark green that all black nephrite jades possess when viewed in thin sections or along their edges.
