A kind of piedmontite schist found in the South Island here in New Zealand, aroha stone is relatively rare and thus seldom seen in jewellery. It is, however much esteemed among the Maori community, who have historically particularly appreciated its bold red to purple colour scheme.
Measuring in at 63mm long and 41mm wide at its widest point, this piece has been carved to capture the layered effect most often seen in this stone, and to show off the contrast between its whiter layers and the red-purple layers for which this stone is appreciated. It's a simple, natural form suited to the everyday outfit, and its soft tones allow it to blend in well with any garment.
