Also known in the Maori language as tangiwai, meaning tear-water, bowenite is the gem grade of antigorite serpentine - a stone that is found alongside nephrite jade and possessed of a wide range of gorgeous colour tones. This lovely piece was found in the Hokitika River, and has been hollowed out in a manner that best show off both its beautiful colour range and its gorgeous translucency.
Measuring in at 56mm diameter, the hollowing of this piece has taken out most of its physical weight, making it remarkably light to wear. The curved nature of its internal structure also forms a natural arch - which is the strongest of all physical structures short of a sphere. So even with such a hollowed form and reduction of weight, this is a remarkably robust piece for everyday wear - and a stunner for fancier occasions.
