Bowenite, known in the Maori language as tangiwai (meaning 'water of tears') is a gem-grade antigorite serpentine that the Maori have long considered to be a kind of pounamu. Though not quite as hard as nephrite jade, it comes in a range of light to deep colours that often rival those of jade, and it can take a beautifully glassy finish with a waxen sensation to the touch. Fine piece often rivalled or even exceeded the value of jade in Maori estimation - and this is a piece with a fine grain and a deep rich hue.

Carved from a gem-grade stone found in the Hokitika River, this breastplate form is carved from a simple disc that has been rendered thin enough to offer decent edge translucency. Measuring in at 56mm wide and 45mm deep, its profile is thin and the pendant is therefore very lightweight. It's a great piece for both fancy and everyday wear, and compliments light to mid-range colours exceptionally well.
