Often much underappreciated, the West Coast of New Zealand produces in addition to its nephrite jades, some very attractive gem-quality examples of the related stone serpentine. These stones can show a striking range of colours and some vivid patterns, with many specimens proving translucent when gorund thinly enough - and a few even showing true transparency. This piece was a pebble showcasing some lovely russet-on-green hues, and it's been hollowed out to the point where it reveals translucency at the centre of the dish when held to strong sunlight.
Measuring in at 66mm long and 41mm wide at its widest point, the hollowing of this pebble hs created a pendant that's surprisingly light as well as visually striking, making it suitable for even the most petite wearer. It's great piece for everyday wear - though its high gloss also makes it a striking piece to ttend more formal attire.
