The manaia is a classic Maori design symbolic of the kaitiaki or protector of the three worlds - Earth, Sea and Sky. It's made up of a form with parts representative of each of these worlds - usually, the hand of man (representing the Earth), the head of a bird (Representing the Sky) and the tail of a fish or eel (representing the Sea). This manaia is carved from a beautiful piece of stone found in Fiordland, showcasing lighter bluish tones interspersed with clusters of black spotting that add contrast and an almost reef-like pattern to the look of the stone.
Measuring in at 112mm long and 50mm wide, this is a large and bold statement piece designed to catch attention and draw immediate notice. Its translucency gives it a bright and wonderful glow in the light, and it's a piece that's sure to please.
