As a general science-fiction fan, our carver is well aware of Star Trek - and he decided to make this sculpture as a kind of tribute piece to some of the artistic design that is seen in that franchise yet often goes under-appreciated outside of it. This sculpture is in the form of the Klingon honour-weapon known as the bat'leth - a weapon that combines many of the qualities of an axe, knife and sword, and which culturally holds a place to that race similar to that of the Japanese katana to the samurai class of Japan.
The bat'leth itself is carved from a rich, dark kawakawa jade of high translucency with an excellent mossy pattern internally. It measures in at 127mm long, with a depth from base of crescent to midpoint of horns of 37mm. It stands free on a base of black jade - so it can be picked up separately and admired, as well as gleaming away on its stand like the honoured weapon it's intended to represent. The base is carved from a section of black jade boulder found in the Hokitika River, which has been polished to a high gloss to show off its matchless silkiness and rich black hue.
Whether you appreciate it as a weapon, or admire it simply for the way it reflects an Asiatic arch-gate's lintel, it's an excellent personal ornament to adorn your home or office - or a great gift to mark your respect for another person (or to please a Trekkie!!)
